I'm renovating, Can I have a smart home?
One of the most common questions we hear from homeowners renovating an existing property is:
“Is it too late to install a smart home because the house is already built?”
The short answer is no.
A new build offers the opportunity to design every cable and system from the ground up, but an existing home can still be transformed into a fully integrated smart home. With careful planning, the right products and a combination of wired and wireless technology, we can integrate lighting, climate control, security, entertainment, blinds, access control and more—without unnecessarily pulling the home apart.
The key is to involve a smart home integrator as early as possible in the renovation.
What Can Be Automated in an Existing Home?
Depending on the property and the scope of the renovation, almost every major technology system can be integrated.
This may include:
Automated lighting and lighting scenes
Heating and air-conditioning control
Motorised blinds and curtains
Multi-room audio
Television and home cinema systems
Security alarms
CCTV cameras
Video intercoms and door stations
Smart locks, gates and garage doors

Rather than operating each system through a different app, a properly designed control system can bring them together into one simple interface.
You could select a “Goodnight” scene that turns off the lights, closes the blinds, lowers the heating or cooling, checks the doors and arms selected areas of the security system.
That is the difference between adding a collection of smart devices and creating an integrated smart home.
A Renovation Creates New Opportunities
Even if the structure of the home is staying in place, renovations usually give us opportunities to install new infrastructure.
Ceilings may be opened for lighting, walls may be replastered, cabinetry may be replaced and switchboards may be upgraded. These are ideal opportunities to run cables and install equipment before the finishes are completed.
Access may also be available through:
Roof spaces
Subfloors and basements
Existing conduits
Service risers
Joinery and cabinetry
Wardrobes
Heating and cooling ducts
Areas being demolished or replastered
New extensions connected to the original home
A good integrator looks at the entire building and develops a practical cable pathway strategy. The aim is not to damage finished areas unnecessarily. It is to use the access created by the renovation intelligently.
Wired, Wireless or a Combination of Both?
There is no single answer that suits every renovation.
A wired system remains the preferred option for critical infrastructure wherever cabling can be installed. Lighting control, networking, security, cameras, intercoms and fixed entertainment equipment generally benefit from a physical cable connection.
Wired systems are typically more reliable, easier to service and less dependent on batteries or changing wireless standards.
However, it is not always practical to install new cables to every location in an existing home. In these situations, carefully selected wireless products can fill the gaps.
The best retrofit solution is often a hybrid design:
Wired infrastructure where access is available
Wireless devices where new cabling would cause excessive damage
A professional control platform connecting everything together
Wireless technology should be used strategically—not simply because it is quicker to install. Filling a home with unrelated Wi-Fi devices can result in multiple apps, unreliable connections and a system that becomes difficult to manage.
Retrofitting Smart Lighting
Lighting control is often the area homeowners assume will be impossible to retrofit. In reality, there are several ways it can be achieved.
If the switchboard and lighting cabling are being upgraded, we may be able to install a centralised lighting-control system. This provides excellent reliability and allows lighting circuits to be controlled from keypads, touchscreens, sensors and automated scenes.
Where the existing electrical cabling must remain, intelligent dimmers, relays and compatible wall controls may be installed at selected switches or other accessible locations.
The correct approach depends on:
The existing wiring configuration
Whether neutral conductors are available at the switches
The type of lighting and LED drivers
Switchboard capacity
Access above and below the rooms
The wall finishes being retained
The level of control the homeowner wants
This needs to be assessed before products are selected. Buying smart switches first and attempting to make them fit later is the wrong way to design the system.
Motorised Blinds and Curtains
Motorised blinds and curtains can also be added during a renovation.
Power and control cabling can often be concealed within ceiling pelmets, window furnishings, joinery or wall cavities. Where new cabling cannot be installed, rechargeable and battery-powered motors may be suitable for selected windows.
We can then integrate the window furnishings with lighting, temperature control and time-based automation.
For example, western blinds can lower automatically during the hottest part of the afternoon, reducing glare and helping the air-conditioning system maintain a comfortable temperature.
Heating and Air-Conditioning Integration
Many existing heating and cooling systems can be integrated, but compatibility must be checked carefully.
Some systems allow direct communication with the smart home platform. Others may require a third-party interface, thermostat integration or controlled contacts. In some cases, older equipment may have limited integration capabilities and an upgrade may be the more sensible long-term option.
We assess the existing equipment before promising a particular level of control. A reliable solution is more important than forcing an unsuitable product into the system.
Security, CCTV and Access Control
A renovation is an excellent time to improve security.
Existing alarm wiring can often be reused after it has been tested. New sensors can then be added in renovated areas, while wireless devices may help cover locations that are difficult to cable.
CCTV cameras, video intercoms, smart gates and electronic door access can also be integrated into the wider home-control system.
A homeowner may be able to see who is at the front door, unlock the gate, open the garage and view security cameras from the same interface used to control the home.
For security-critical devices, wired connections should be prioritised wherever practical.
Do Not Forget the Network
Every modern smart home depends on a strong network.
A single modem or wireless router placed in a cupboard is rarely enough for a large or heavily constructed home. Brickwork, concrete, metal, stone and floor heating can all affect wireless performance.
During the renovation, we can install data cabling and position multiple wireless access points throughout the property. This creates reliable coverage for phones, televisions, streaming services, automation controllers and other connected devices.
Good Wi-Fi is not achieved by simply adding more wireless devices. It requires correct access-point placement, structured cabling and proper network configuration.
Planning for the Areas You Are Not Renovating Yet
A renovation may only cover part of the home, but the technology plan should consider the entire property.
We can install spare conduits, data cables and switchboard capacity for future stages. This may cost very little while walls and ceilings are open, but it can save substantial work later.
Even if every system is not installed immediately, the infrastructure can be prepared for:
Future motorised blinds
Additional cameras
Outdoor entertaining areas
A home cinema
Solar and battery monitoring
Electric vehicle charging
Additional Wi-Fi access points
Future extensions
New technology that becomes available later
Good smart home design is not only about what is being installed today. It should make future changes easier.
When Should the Smart Home Integrator Become Involved?
Ideally, the integrator should be involved before the electrical and lighting plans are finalised.
By this stage, we can coordinate with the homeowner, builder, electrician, architect, interior designer, cabinetmaker, lighting designer and heating and cooling contractor.
Early involvement allows us to determine:
What can be integrated
Which existing infrastructure can be reused
Where new cabling is required
Where equipment will be housed
What switchboard and rack space is needed
Which walls or ceilings require access
What should be allowed for future stages
Calling the integrator after the plastering, painting and cabinetry are complete does not necessarily make automation impossible—but it can reduce the available options and increase the cost.
The Honest Answer: Every Retrofit Is Different
Can every existing home be turned into a fully integrated smart home?
In most cases, a very high level of integration is achievable. However, the exact result depends on access, construction, existing wiring, budget and how much of the home is being renovated.
Be cautious of anyone who promises that every system can be integrated without inspecting the property. A successful retrofit begins with understanding the building, testing the existing infrastructure and designing around the real conditions.
