1. Start With the Right Infrastructure

Structured cabling, electrical design, equipment locations, switchboard capacity, Wi-Fi coverage and network infrastructure all need to be considered before the walls are closed. Wireless technology can be useful, particularly in existing homes, but it should not replace proper cabling during a new build or major renovation.
Your smart home infrastructure may need to support:

A well-designed smart home should not require a phone for every basic action. Lighting, blinds and other frequently used functions should still have intuitive wall controls. Apps, touchscreens and voice assistants should provide additional convenience—not become the only way to operate the home.
Automation should also be purposeful. Lights responding automatically as you arrive home can be useful. Lights turning off while you are sitting still in a room are not.
The best smart homes feel natural because the technology has been designed around the people using it.
4. Plan for Reliability, Support and Future Upgrades
A smart home is a long-term investment. The system should still be serviceable years after the original installation.
Technology will change, products will eventually reach end of life and software will need to be updated. This makes ongoing support and system design just as important as the initial installation.
Before choosing an integrator, consider:
Who will support the system after completion?
Is the system properly documented?
Can individual components be upgraded without replacing everything?
Are spare network ports, rack space and switchboard capacity available?
Is the equipment installed neatly and clearly labelled?
Can the integrator diagnose or service the system remotely?
Are established, supported technologies being used?
Avoid building the entire home around short-lived consumer gadgets or cloud services that could be discontinued without warning. Consumer devices can still form part of a smart home, but the home’s critical functions should be built on reliable infrastructure and proven control systems.
The relationship with your integrator also matters. You are not only choosing someone to complete an installation—you are choosing the company that may support and develop the system for many years.
